Geoengineering Modeling Research Consortium

Date:

Monday, September 30, 2019 (All day)

In the summer of 2019, the Geoengineering Modeling Research Consortium (GMRC) was launched. The consortium brings together U.S. researchers from universities and national laboratories, and is tasked with identifying and prioritizing critical research gaps in climate modeling which may have specific significance to geoengineering. In addition, the GMRC seeks to coordinate amongst U.S. researchers to close these gaps through collaborative model assessment and development efforts. We are a part of this consortia which we expect will play an essential role in advancing the community’s understanding of the potential risks and benefits of solar geoengineering.

To date, there have been two meetings of the GMRC. After a kickoff meeting at the National Corporation for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mesa lab in Boulder, Colorado, the SGRP hosted the second meeting of the consortium on September 30, 2019. The meeting provided a forum for debate and discussion of known and unknown gaps in our understanding of the Earth system’s potential response to geoengineering. It culminated in a panel discussion which mixed leaders in geoengineering and in related fields who might have insights into as-yet unanticipated consequences of a geoengineering strategy. A full synthesis of the meeting’s outcomes is available online, with a third meeting now being planned for early 2020.
