Governance Lessons from SCoPEx

Date:

Friday, February 25, 2022, 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Location:

Zoom & Ofer 401

Frank Keutsch, Stonington Professor of Engineering and Atmospheric Science and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard and Louise Bedsworth, Director, Land Use Program, Berkeley Law, UCLA and Chair of SCoPEx Advisory Committee, will discuss current governance arrangements for SCoPEx, experiences and lessons learned since the project was first announced, and broader questions related to research governance and social license.

The Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, or SCoPEx, is a small-scale outdoor experiment intended to study aerosol microphysics and atmospheric chemistry in order to learn more about the potential benefits and risks of solar geoengineering via stratospheric aerosol injection. Due to its novelty, SCoPEx also provides an opportunity to build, evaluate, and explore governance mechanisms applicable to solar geoengineering field experiments.

This is a hybrid event, meeting over Zoom and in person at HKS. If you wish to attend via Zoom, please register in advance. If you are an HUID holder and wish to attend in person at HKS, please email claire_byrne@hks.harvard.edu.
